What to Do When You Get Pulled Over by Police

   For most people, a traffic stop is going to be the only time they interact with a police officer in a confrontational situation. While traffic stops are usually without incident, it is important to know how to be prepared to handle these stressful situations.

   First, it is imperative that you always have your driver’s license, your vehicle registration, and proof of car insurance. Failure to have these documents with you can, in and of itself, be the basis for a citation regardless of whether you actually have a driver’s license or insurance. In many States, including Wisconsin, it is a legal requirement to carry proof of insurance, and failure to actually have your insurance card with you can lead to a costly citation. The same applies to your driver’s license and registration. 

   If you are being pulled over by a police officer, the first step is to remain calm and safely bring your vehicle to a stop in a safe location as far to the right as possible. When bringing your vehicle to a stop, make sure to use your turn signal to signify any lane changes. You should begin slowing down the vehicle immediately while looking for a safe place to come to a stop. Unless you have no other choice, do not stop your vehicle in a traffic lane.
