Was Nature Always ‘Predator vs. Prey’?

   In the basic structure of nature, it is a drama of “predator and prey.”  But was it that way right from the beginning of creation?

   Today there are two types of kritters that consume meat in their diets. There are omnivores (e.g. raccoons, bears), that live off a mix of both flesh and plant-related foods.  And then there are the carnivores (e.g. lions, tigers, wolves, etc.), and these, for the most part, feed on meat as their main diet. 

   Did God originally create these as predatory beasts to get their nourishment at the expense of the lives of other creatures? 

   Scripture clearly shows us that  originally God did not intend animals (and even humans) to consume meat as part of their diets.  All living things were commanded to eat only plant-based foods for their sustenance. Genesis 1:29 - 30, “And God said, ‘Behold, I have given you every herb-bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.....And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.”

   1 John 4:8 says that life on earth was created perfect by a Being who is decribed as literally being “love.” ...
