The Church in Crisis (Part 7) ‘The Kingdom at Work’ (Luke 13:1-9)

   It was brought to the attention of Jesus that there were certain “Galilaens, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices,” to see what his response would be.  I am sure he did not respond in any way they had expected.

   “And Jesus, answering said unto them, ‘Suppose that these Galilaens were sinners above all the Galilaens, because they suffered such things?  I tell you, nay; but except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.  Or (let us also consider) those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwell in Jerusalem?  I tell you, nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall likewise perish.’”  What did He mean by making this comparison? Jesus also gave them this parable to consider.  “A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon.”  After three years still finding none, he told his gardener to cut it down, being a waste of space.  The gardener “said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I dig about it, and dung it: and if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.”  What does this parable illustrate about the previous comparison between them and the Galilaens who perished?
