What Does the Bible Say About Premarital Sex?

   Sex before marriage goes hand in hand with other types of immorality in the Bible. Matthew 5:28 says, “But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

   Jesus gave us clear spiritual examples of God’s Commandment to keep ourselves away from sexual activity outside of marriage when He stated that even sexual lust for someone was the same as adultery in God’s eyes.

   In the Old Testament, women were never permitted to be close to any man until they were betrothed and then only when chaperoned. Sex before marriage was not permitted.  A betrothed woman was legally bound to her future husband; if another man took her sexually, she was considered immoral and could be stoned to death for adultery along with the male perpetrator.  (see Deuteronomy 22:28 - 29).  If a woman who was not betrothed to a man had a sexual relationship, the man had to pay the woman’s family a certain amount of money and was compelled to marry her and could never divorce her under any circumstances.
