What Does the Bible Say About the Occult?

Complimentary Story
What does the Bible say about astrology, horoscopes, and the occult? Sadly, even some Christians have even been caught up in these practices. But is it really all that bad for believers to dable in these things?

Following astrology isn’t something new. It has been around for hundreds and even  thousands of years. Any occult practices are  attractive because of our human desire to know the future and our desire to find meaning and purpose in life. Thousands of people worldwide check their horoscopes every day, trying to get insight for their day and week ahead. Even though most horoscopes are very general, people still believe there is some relevance to them for their daily lives.

But what does the Bible say? The Bible strongly condemns delving into the occult….horoscopes, astrology, tarot cards, fortune tellers, palm readings, spiritism, mediums, and even psychics fall into this category.

Deuteronomy 18:10-14 says, “There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. And because of these abominations the Lord your God is driving them out before you. You shall be blameless before the Lord your God, for these nations, which you are about to dispossess, listen to fortune-tellers and to diviners. But as for you, the Lord your God has not allowed you to do this.”

That’s pretty direct…..dabbling in the occult is an abomination to God. Isaiah 47:13 further tells us, “You are wearied with your many counsels; let them stand forth and save you, those who divide the heavens, who gaze at the stars, who at the new moons make known what shall come upon you.”

Micah 5:12 warns us, “And I will cut off sorceries from your hand, and you shall have no more tellers of fortunes.”

The Bible condemns the use these things because God alone knows the future. It is not for us to try to divine the things that God has not revealed to us in His Word. Deuteronomy 29:29 says this: “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.”

When we try to forsee the future, we are showing a lack of trust in God’s leading.  Christians are treading on eggshells when they follow horoscopes or astrology. The Bible tells us to take into our hearts the Word of God with trembling and fear and put our trust fully in Him.
