Thanksgiving

   Thanksgiving. It conjures up an image of family gathered around the table, with abundant turkey, dressing, cranberries and pumpkin pie for dessert. But what does Thanksgiving really mean? Let’s take a closer look at the word “thanksgiving.”

   Thanks: Signifies gratefulness for a loved one’s safety; a blessing in the safe delivery of a newborn infant; a safe to/from trip either in or outside of the U.S. and no harm came to the traveling party. It can also signify gratefulness for the gift of life: recovery from an accident or a surgery; remission of cancer or donation of a vital body part such as a kidney, eye, lung or heart to someone whose life is in peril. These things have nothing to do with food but during this holiday food is what we associate with Thanksgiving.

   Giving: The act of giving a gift to someone. For example, passing along good news to family that their loved one is alive after a fall or surgery. It is also the act of giving someone a birthday present, a hug, the donation of time, talent or money to a worthy organization or one which is close to the heart such as the American Cancer Society, Alzheimer’s Association,  Arthritis Foundation.
