
Paul was a minister of Jesus Christ and, as such, recognized the importance of prayer (see 1 Timothy 2:1). In verse 2 of our text (Colossians 4:2-4), Paul instructs the Colossians to “continue in prayer” (pray persistently) (cf. 1 Thessalonians 5:17). This is a call to a prayer life that is not sporadic or spontaneous, like when we need help, but is ongoing and constant. Our communication with God should not consist of simply throwing up a prayer before bedtime or a quick thanks before dinner. As Christ is present in our life all day, every day, our communication with God is to be constant. This sounds strange unless you realize prayer is not dependent upon a posture, it is direct interaction with the Lord.
