Proper Perspective: Colossians 4:7-9; Philemon

   In last month’s edition of Wisconsin Christian News, we began looking at Paul’s sincere care for his fellow servants of Christ.  We highlighted in Colossians 4:7-9 how Paul considered Tychicus to be a beloved brother, a faithful minister, and a fellow servant in the gospel of Jesus Christ.  It is always a blessing to have other brothers and sisters in Christ to serve alongside us.  We all need the encouragement, learning, partnership, and, yes, correction from these dear fellow laborers. 

   From Colossians 4:9, we learn that there was another gentleman who would be accompanying Tychicus to deliver this letter to the church at Colossae.  This man, Onesimus, was also a faithful, beloved brother who would be able to verify the news concerning Paul.  Onesimus would be particularly effective, because Colossae was his hometown.  This is why Paul refers to him as “one of you.” 

   Onesimus had another, more personal letter to deliver at this time as well – the letter to Philemon, from which we gain a greater appreciation for Onesiumus’ back-story.  We learn that Onesimus was a bond slave, meaning he was working off an unpaid debt owed to Philemon; however, he escaped his responsibilities by running away to another town.  If you put yourself in Philemon’s place, you would not have a high regard for Onesimus.  You wou ...
