We Must Save the Electoral College and Constitution

   A serious threat to the Electoral College, and therefore our Constitution, is making its way through various states, including Wisconsin (AB 185/SB 197).  The national Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) will gut the Electoral College by having the states join together and commit their presidential electors to the winner of the national popular vote, regardless of how the individual states vote.

   Our Founding Fathers looked at many different options before deciding on the Electoral College to elect the President.  In fact, it was the last part of the Constitution that was written.  There are various reasons the Electoral College is critical to the survival of the Republic, including:

   1).  Presidential elections are decentralized, taking place in the states.  Any dispute over mistakes or fraud are contained within individual states, without triggering a nationwide recount.

   2).  The Electoral College can act to amplify the results of a presidential election.  In 1880, James Garfield won the popular vote by less the 10,000 votes but won the electoral college 214 to 155.

   3).  The greatest benefit of the Electoral College is that it ensures that winning supermajorities in one region of the country is not sufficient to win the White House.
