First, I noticed that David did not go out seeking a fight, but rather he was on a routine mission for his father, Jesse. There was nothing in the instructions about taking provisions to his brothers that would have led this young man to think that this day would be any different than the others. As believers, we have our orders to go and preach the Gospel and make disciples of Christ. While each day may seem to be a continuation of the previous day, we have no guarantee that what we face today will be as it was yesterday. No one plans to face a Goliath, it just happens; but how we respond to that Goliath in the moment will determine whether that encounter will be but a footnote in history or an epic encounter chronicled down through the ages.
