A Gift of Love

   Is it just me, or have we over-utilized the word “Love” to the point that it has lost its root meaning? We say things like:  “Dude, I love your new car!”  “Girlfriend, I love your new dress!” “I love this coffee!” “I loved that movie!” Do we truly “love” those things?  Or have we just never experienced true love and become numb to what it can truly mean to a person?

   Love isn’t a noun and cannot properly be used to describe anything. Nor is love a feeling or emotion one can conjure up at a moment’s notice. Love is a verb and is displayed through our actions toward another.  Jesus Christ issued instruction to His followers in Matthew 5:43-46, “Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy (According to Old Testament teachings).  But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; For if you love them which love you, what reward have ye? Do not even the publicans do the same?”
