Come Walk With Us (Part 18)

August 2023

This afternoon, a county sheriff pulled over and asked where we were headed. We were sure he would ask for I.D. but he didn’t even ask our names, just visited a few minutes and then went his way. The police in almost every county we have passed through since we started the walk have checked us. We have not been hassled. They just want to know who we are and where we are going. We do not mind them checking on us, at least this way if something happens they already know who we are and why we are here.

We stopped to buy supplies and were told about a campground just outside of town. There was once a fort here and the appearance of an old western town has been maintained. We camped near a pond under large trees that provide cool shade. It appears that we are the only customers and the peace and quiet is relaxing and welcome. The charge to camp for the night is $8.00, kind of high for tent camping, but we can take a shower and have bathrooms. Besides, there isn’t any place else to camp so we will enjoy a small luxury tonight. (Psalm 68:19)
While we were getting coffee the next morning, the owner warned us that there had been a jailbreak last night and the man had not been found. He cautioned us to be wary of people we meet, especially if they are on foot. Almost immediately, he realized the implication of his remark and we all got a laugh from it.
