Has The American Church Taken a Knee?

  Christians are known for being people of prayer.  In fact, it is not unusual for a believer to mention prayer as a solution to many of our problems. Often you will hear them refer to “hitting their knees” as a synonym for praying about a troubling situation or when seeking direction from God. A bended knee is a sign of submission.
 
   I love using sports analogies because they often reflect the issues of life. It is common to hear a football announcer refer to a “Hail Mary” pass, a “wing and a prayer,” or a “miracle” escape from the clutches of defeat. Whether we will admit it or not, prayer is a part of our daily lexicon…but not necessarily in a Holy and righteous way.
 
   It is not unusual at the end of the game for a team to “take a knee” … which is a reference to the QB taking a snap and immediately placing his knee on the ground as a signal that the game is over. It is an outward understanding by both teams that the struggle is complete.
 
   “You win and we lose” is the agreement that both teams make when the team with the ball “takes a knee.” Game over. We win. You lose. Good try. Shake hands and head to the locker room.
