Depressed People Of the Bible: Moses — A Basket Case

   Moses started off life as a basket case (pun intended). And at one point he was even suicidal (we will get to that in another article). As Moses’ mother saw babies all around her being killed and thrown to the crocodiles, we cannot begin to imagine the feelings of real fear, anxiety, concern, and grief that flowed through the umbilical cord and mother’s milk during Moses’ time in his mother’s womb and while being breastfed. That was just the beginning.

   We can’t imagine the separation anxiety and abandonment Moses experienced when he was separated from his mother, father, sister, and brother when Jochebed was done weaning him.

    Then there is the trauma of assimilation into a new family and a new culture, with the pressures of being in the royal family, living in a glass bowl, having to measure up, live up to a certain standard, not to mention the intense competition for the throne and positions around the throne. All of that and so much more influenced the early childhood of Moses.

   In adulthood, Moses was faced with the huge dilemma of feeling a part of two worlds. He related to his adopted family of the Pharaoh’s daughter and of Egyptian culture, but was also drawn to his biological Jewish heritage of the slaves. To whom would he align his future?
