If you have not taken the time to read the book “War is a Racket” by Smedley Butler, I highly suggest that you do.
Major General Smedley D. Butler, one of the most colorful officers in the Marine Corps’ long history, was one of the two Marines who received two Medals of Honor for separate acts of outstanding heroism and was responsible for conveying to Americans the truth of war.
“This was the ‘war to make the world safe for democracy’,” he wrote. “No one told them that dollars and cents were the real reason. No one mentioned to them, as they marched away, that their going and their dying would mean huge war profits.”
He goes on: “War is a racket. It always has been… A few profit – and the many pay. But there is a way to stop it. You can’t end it by disarmament conferences. You can’t eliminate it by peace parleys at Geneva. Well-meaning but impractical groups can’t wipe it out by resolutions. It can be smashed effectively only by taking the profit out of war.”
