Jumping Off the Conspiracy Bridge

Complimentary Story
April 2024

Whether it was during, after or perhaps even before the tragic Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore, it seems that various theories with regard to the real cause literally exploded overnight. Was it the Illuminati, Putin in retribution for the pipeline destruction, Big brother, Donald Trump, green earth fanatics, the list goes on and on and on. As with the Kennedy assassination, Oklahoma City, 9/11 or a famous prisoner’s suicide, you name it and Boom, “experts”  immediately begin to collect their “proof” of what really happened.  Knowing, of course, that it must have been a conspiracy. We are an amazing nation especially when it comes to our imagination and then of course we argue over the “facts,” especially if you are a believer.

When it comes to the latter, I’m reminded of a recent post on the internet in which the host writer was asking his Christian readers to submit any “news” of the day to his blog. At first it started off quite innocently until one of the participants volunteered a Bible verse with of course their “real” spirit filled interpretation.  As expected it didn’t take long for another reader to pipe in with his version of the truth.  Isn’t that amazing — 45,000 Christian denominations and two Christians can’t agree or should I say “walk together?”  Sadly, and as you might imagine, both of our “Christian” experts ended up eventually calling each other names and then calling it a day.

More of that later, but first and when it comes to major catastrophes like what happened in Baltimore recently, there are at least two basic rules at play here.   One rule says that if something major happens then there must have been something as “Big” and mysterious that caused it. That is called proportional bias   Big = Big.  The other is what I would call just plain ole’ bias. You start with a theory and then put only information into that template which matches what you already “know” to be the facts. There’s just some sort of a conspiracy because no other explanation really makes any sense — Occam’s razor withstanding.

What is Occam’s razor?  Let’s just say that if the answer is obvious and in many cases simple, then use that answer.  It saves a whole lot of time and effort, you know, “Keep it Simple Stupid.”   For instance, in the case of the Bridge Collapse in Baltimore, given the lack of attention and effort on the part of today’s modern man — especially politicians — the simple solution would apply. The simple explanation being this was a stupid avoidable accident that if it didn’t happen last week it would soon happen.  Now if you want to conspire here then you might say that transportation related events seem to be happening under the current administration and our DOT Guru Pete Buttigieg.  There was that train derailment in Ohio, then the problem with airplane doors . . .

There, you see how easy it is to plant a little conspiracy seed even in our simple explanation? Ok, so now let’s argue about it, right? Everyone, especially those who claim Christ as their leader need to be very careful in not only what we do but perhaps especially what we say. Sometimes it’s best to just step back, take a deep breath, exhale and let the facts speak for themselves. Just the facts ma’am.

Personally, I am still accessing information with regard to the cause of the Baltimore bridge collapse hoping that I can come to an objective explanation for this tragic event. As far as conspiracy theories go, I like how Thomas Sowell reasons when he advises correctly that:

“One of the reasons for conspiracy theories is an assumption that people in high places always know what they are doing. When they do something that makes no sense, devious reasons are imagined by conspiracy theorists, when in fact it may be due to plain old ignorance and incompetence.”

   Sounds pretty simple, amen?
